In your pursuit of a leaner body, you know doubt utilized a bathroom scale to chronicle your progress. However, you may have been doing yourself a grave disservice. As you know, a scale measures weight loss, but it will never tell you where this weigh loss was from. This is where the problem lies. When dieting, your combined weight loss could potentially come from fat loss, water loss, or muscle loss. Obviously, the former is what we all want to achieve, and the latter two are what we need to try and avoid whenever dieting. Unfortunately, many of the fad diets claiming rapid weight loss are often achieving this at the expense of water loss and/or muscle loss. Generally speaking, if you are losing greater than two pounds per week you are likely losing muscle as well.
The best way to monitor your progress when embarking on a new diet is to measure your body fat percentage and your lean body mass. Lean body mass is your weight excluding fat. Lean body mass includes bone, muscle, and other fat free tissues with the majority of this being muscle. By measuring these two items, you will be able to determine how much fat you are losing and whether or not you are losing any muscle. The simplest way to measure your body fat percentage is through skin fold testing. If you know a personal trainer or other fitness professional in your area, they will likely be able to take these measurements for you. However, self skin fold testing is available with the use of the Accu-Measure, which can by found easily online.
Once you have determined your body fat percentage, you are ready to calculate your fat weight and lean body mass. To calculate your fat weight, multiply your total weight by your body fat percentage. Remember to convert your body fat percentage to decimal form before multiplying. I.e. 11% body fat would be converted to .11 Once you have calculated your pounds of fat, subtract your pounds of fat from your total weight in pounds, which will give you your lean body mass.
Armed with these simple equations, you will be able to track your weight loss much more accurately than by simply using a scale alone. You will know exactly where your weight loss is coming from, so you can quickly make adjustments to your caloric intake to maximize your results. For example, if your lean body mass decreases and your body fat decreases, this should tell you there is to much of a calorie deficit and you should increase your daily calorie intake slightly to prevent the loss in lean body mass. Whenever youre on a calorie restricted diet, some loss in lean body mass and therefore muscle is hard to avoid. However, this loss in lean body mass should be limited to a few tenths of a pound per week. Initially, when first starting a diet program, you will likely notice a larger drop in lean body mass due to water loss. Dont get alarmed by this. An obvious downward trend in your lean body mass over time is definitely a concern.
It is beyond the scope of this article to discuss proper nutrition and how to calculate daily caloric needs for weight loss; however, I will mention a simple formula that can be utilized to get you in the ballpark if you have average or better body fat percentages. To calculate your total daily calories needed for fat loss, multiply your total weight by 12-13. This will give you a good starting point. I will also mention that spreading your calories out over 5-6 meals per day with each meal consisting of approximately 55% complex carbohydrate, 30% lean protein, and 15% fat will give you the best chance of permanent fat loss. Obviously, these percentages may not work for everyone, but they are a great place to start. If you want to maintain your hard earned muscle, it is also imperative you maintain a weight lifting routine, while dieting.
I hope this information will help you achieve all your weight loss goals and help you understand exactly how your nutrition and diet program is affecting your body. There is certainly still a place for the bathroom scale, but unless youre also measuring the items above, you will never fully realize the affect of your diet program and reaching your full potential may be difficult. The obese patients in the study received echocardiograms to predict their risk for heart failure by measuring their left ventricular function. This study shows that weight loss should be part of the treatment for heart failure if the person is overweight. A blood test called HBA1C will help your doctor decide if you are at risk for a heart attack, even if you are not diabetic. When your blood sugar level rises too high, sugar sticks to cells. Once on a cell, sugar cannot be removed and is converted to a poison called sorbitol that destroys the cell to damage arteries and cause heart attacks. HemoglobinA1C (HBA1C) measures how much sugar is attached to cell membranes. A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine (Volume 16, 2005) shows that an HBA1C level below 4.6 percent means you are at very low risk for a heart attack. However, each one-percent increase raises the risk for a heart attack nearly 2.5 times. So people who have HBA1Cs above 4.6 are at increased risk for heart attacks, even if they are not diabetic.
More than 40 percent of Americans die of heart attacks and other blood vessel damaging diseases and 35 percent ultimately become diabetic. That means that all people who have HBA1Cs above 5 should consider weight loss by eating less and exercising more, avoiding smoking, and going on a diet that limits refined carbohydrates (foods made from flour or with added sugars), saturated fats (meat and chicken) and partially hydrogenated oils. If your HBA1C is above 6, your doctor may prescribe diabetic medications.

A study has been recently published that demonstrate the importance of vitamin b-12 in supporting healthy brain functions. The first study we will to point out is The University of Oxford study, published in the journal Neurology, in which they tested the 107 apparently healthy volunteers over a five-year period.
Older people with lower than average vitamin B-12 levels were more than six times more likely to experience brain shrinkage, researchers concluded. Some studies suggest two out of five people are deficient in the vitamin. The Oxford study looked at a group of people between 61 and 87, splitting it into thirds depending on the participants vitamin B-12 levels. Professor David Smith, who directs the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Aging, said he now planned a trial of vitamin B in the elderly to see if taking them could slow brain shrinkage.
He said: This study adds another dimension to our understanding of the effects of vitamin B on the brain - the rate of shrinkage of the brain as we age may be partly influenced by what we eat.
Shrinkage has been strongly linked with a higher risk of developing dementia at a later stage and Rebecca Wood, the chief executive of the Alzheimers Research Trust, said further research was needed.
This study suggests that consuming more vitamin B-12 through eating meat, fish, fortified cereals or milk as part of a balanced diet might help protect the brain. Liver and shellfish are particularly rich sources of Vitamin B-12.
Dr Susanne Sorensen, from the Alzheimers Society said: Shrinkage is usually associated with the development of dementia. As vitamin B-12 may be given as a food supplement, it may be useful to include tests of vitamin B12 levels in the general assessment of health of older individuals.

Its no mistake that the acronym for the Standard American Diet is S.A.D. When America exports the dietary principles of S.A.D. to another country, a decline in the health of its people quickly follows. It also holds true for foreigners who immigrate here, as they quickly find out that their health declines and their weight increases when eating as the natives do. In all fairness, America should have signs at its entry borders that warn of the risks that go with adopting our S.A.D. lifestyle.
Using the governments Body Mass Index (BMI) standard, a calculation based on height and weight, over 66% of Americans are overweight and 34% are obese. If current trends continue, by 2015, its estimated that 75% of American adults will be overweight or obese. By 2030, that estimate increases to more than 86 percent of adults, and by 2048, well lets just say that finding a normal weight person will be like finding a needle in a haystack. The BMI standard isnt without just criticism, as other body measurements are not considered. When considering the overall trend, however, its obvious that Americans are getting fatter and the associated illnesses and healthcare costs that accompany this trend are also on the rise.
Being overweight increases our risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, cancer, liver and gall bladder disease, osteoarthritis, infertility, and various other related diseases and conditions. All of these are signs of lifestyle mismanagement, not medication deficiencies.
I imagine that a pharmaceutical companys Board of Directors looks upon Americas sedentary lifestyle and standard diet much in the same way that a cannibal looks upon a newly caught fat missionary prior to feasting. Their gains are now our gains.

President-Elect Barack Obama keeps reminding us that we need to prepare ourselves for making sacrifices in order to correct the excesses of the past. Over half of Americans lead a sedentary lifestyle. The current government recommendation calls for 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week. I have always thought that the government usually gets it half-right. Exercising 60 minutes 5 days a week is probably even better. Start where you are and go from there. Leave the have to do it/be it/have it now attitude behind. Evolve your desires to allow for gradual progress to have its impact.
In his book What May Be Piero Ferrucci states, You must not follow your feelings. Your feelings must follow you. We must begin to exhibit an emotional intelligence that directs our food choices. We must eat with a conscious awareness of how wish we to transform our bodies, for our bodies are transforming from moment-to-moment whether we like it or not. How it transforms can be up to us.
So as Thanksgiving approaches, I believe that its time to be thankful for the abundance and opportunities that we have as Americans. Its time to invest in ourselves and our future. A study of nearly 14,000 men and women found people were more likely to gain excessive amounts of weight -- five per cent or more of their body weight -- if they scored high on a measure of vital exhaustion.
And that raises the question: Is the combined stress of work and home making people fat?
Vital exhaustion is a psychological state in which people experience fatigue, irritability and feelings of demoralization. Other studies have found the condition dramatically increases the risk of a first, and repeat, heart attack.
An estimated 30 to 60 per cent of cardiac "events" are preceded by vital exhaustion.
Obesity is associated with mental stress and heart disease.
The British and American team wondered whether vital exhaustion can lead to a prediction of obesity.
"In other words, you have those feelings, those feelings lead to weight gain, and that weight gain leads to cardiac events," says co-author June Stevens, chair of the department of nutrition in the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. "That's what we were hypothesizing."
Their study, published in the journal Obesity, looked at the association between vital exhaustion and body mass index among 13,727 white and African-American men and women, aged 45 to 64.
After height and weight were measured, participants filled out a questionnaire that asked, among other things:
Heavier people had higher levels of vital exhaustion to begin with, and when researchers checked back three and six years later, white men and women -- but not African-Americans -- with high vital exhaustion had gained more weight.
Researchers can't explain the cultural differences. And heavier people tend to gain more weight over time. But white women who scored high on vital exhaustion were 34 per cent more likely to gain an excess amount of weight -- five per cent or more of their body weight -- over the study period than women who scored low.
"And it was 35 per cent in white men," Stevens says. "That's a sizable weight gain."
But it's a bit of a chicken-and-egg dilemma, Steven says. It could be "reverse causality," meaning the extra weight could be causing exhaustion. But understanding the link could lead to better targeted treatments to reduce vital exhaustion, prevent future weight gain and improve weight loss interventions.
The finding fits with what researchers have seen in animals. "If you stress animals enough they go into this stage where they stop moving, they just eat and they have hormonal changes that promote fat absorption in the abdomen," says Dr. Arya Sharma, professor of medicine and chair for cardiovascular obesity research and management at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
